Mobil is a petroleum brand currently owned by ExxonMobil. Initially, it was operated by Mobil Oil Corporation, which merged with Exxon in 1999 to form ExxonMobil. Mobil’s origins trace back to the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony), a result of Standard Oil’s breakup in 1911. Socony merged with Vacuum Oil Company in 1931, adopting the Mobil name, and later rebranded to Mobil Oil Corporation in 1966.

Mobil pioneered several industry firsts, including pay-at-the-pump services, jet aviation fuel production, and mobile payment devices. The merger with Exxon, finalized on November 30, 1999, saw Exxon purchasing Mobil, with Mobil shareholders receiving Exxon stock. The Mobil brand continues to be used for gas stations and motor oils, notably Mobil 1. The former Mobil headquarters in Fairfax County served as ExxonMobil’s downstream headquarters until 2015, when operations moved to Spring, Texas.
